No Itanium Left Behind

July 20, 2007

I generally enjoy reading corporate blogs, whether it is Sun Microsystems CEO Jonathan Schwartz or the Red Hat Corporate blogs. I’ve even been known to enjoy the blogging from some of Microsoft’s developers. I wanted to point out a particularly interesting piece; however, by Pat Gelsinger who has been responsible for the development of the Itanium line at Intel since 2005. Here is a short excerpt that puts in no uncertain terms the problems with execution regarding the Itanium:

The first thing that became apparent was, our execution had been poor. Numerous project cancelations and many product slips. Our credibility was damaged and our customer’s ability to consistently deliver winning products was hampered.

It’s very refreshing to read something written from the perspective of someone willing to acknowledge mistakes that have been made with with regard to the Itanium family and take ownership.

It’s also encouraging to see the openess in Gelsinger’s admission. Twenty year ago, or even ten years ago, such candid talk was considered taboo in the industry. Fortunately , a lot has changed. If this type of transparency is found throughout Intel, the stockholders should be pleased.
